All Schools can be Great.  All Schools can be Green.

A Sustainability Plan for the School District of Philadelphia

is for all children to have a great school, close to where they live.  This includes providing well-resourced, clean, comfortable, healthy, and safe school environments conducive to teaching and learning.

The School District of Philadelphia’s mission is to deliver on the right of every child in Philadelphia to an excellent public school education.

The GreenFutures’ sustainability plan supports the District’s guiding document, Action Plan v3.0 and provides a clear framework that contributes to the creation of global citizens, promotes cleaner green career pathways and will equip the future leaders and decision makers with the knowledge and skills needed for a changing world.

District staff, stakeholders and community partners routinely meet to implement sixty-five specific and measurable actions that contribute to the attainment of five targets related to the following focus areas:

  • Education for Sustainability;
  • Consumption and Waste;
  • Energy and Efficiencies;
  • School Greenscapes; and,
  • Healthy Schools, Healthy Living

I believe that healthy, green schools create a more equitable environment for our children to learn. By making healthy, green schools accessible to all of our students, we can improve the learning potential of our students. I look forward to working towards greener schools in Philadelphia. Let’s work together to join this movement and create the greenest school district in America! Dr. William Hite , Superintendent Dr. William Hite , Superintendent
